Seven Recommended Environmentally Friendly Restaurants & Cafes

Updated: Aug 26

The problem of waste is an issue that is still an unresolved topic of discussion today. Plastic waste is still considered very dangerous for land, ocean and even air ecosystems.

But it is not only plastic waste, there is also other forms of inorganic waste that cannot be decomposed which can disrupt the environmental ecosystem, and, whether you realize it or not, it turns out that the biggest contributor to plastic waste comes from the restaurant business.

Usually, the waste comes from leftover food that has been not been sold, leftover food from guests which has not been eaten, and other restaurant materials such as plastic straws, plastic bottles, Styrofoam and  plastic containers, and the wrapping in which some many of the supplies are delivered in.

However, as time goes by, many restaurants or cafes have now started to become aware of protecting the environment. So now there are some restaurants and cafes that are built with an eco-friendly concept. The concept starts from the aspect of managing waste, but also using recycled items for the interiors of the venue and other great ideas.

Here are some restaurants or cafes we have selected because they have an eco-friendly concept:

1. Burgreens

Burgreens is a vegetarian burger restaurant that serves burgers in a healthier format. Apart from that, Burgreens also has a commitment to reducing their commercial waste produced every day.

To reduce food waste, they always use all parts of the raw materials for cooking. Like sweet potatoes which are processed into chips and then the rest of the potato is processed into dessert.

Apart from its restaurant menu which has a vegetarian concept, Burgreens also uses more environmentally friendly packaging such as banana leaves to package food, bamboo straws and environmentally friendly packaging made from cassava for take away.

2. Kommunal88

Komunal 88 is a coffee shop in the capital that applies an environmentally friendly concept to minimize the use of plastic materials. Komunal 88 serves a variety of coffee, tea and various Italian dishes. In its efforts to reduce plastic waste, Komunal 88 used their water filtration system to reduce plastic bottles. They also reuse the bottles used to serve their water. There will even be a special offer for buyers who return takeaway water bottles from Komunal88.

And what's more unique is that if there are buyers who want to take food home, they are required to pay a deposit to get a metal dining container which can be later returned when they next buy food at the restaurant.

3. Kozi Coffee

Even though it is located in a housing complex, Kozy cafe offers a coffee concept in the yard which of course has an outdoor area in the very large front yard. So visitors can enjoy coffee while enjoying the cool breeze.

To support their environmentally friendly concept, they use stainless steel straws instead of plastic straws, so they are considered more environmentally friendly.

4. Gajetto Geek Café

One of the cafes located in Kemang has an environmentally friendly concept in terms of the furniture they provide. They adopted the 3R style, namely (reuse reduce and recycle) for the interior inside.

There is a very unique piece of furniture, namely the use of bottled drink corks which are designed in such a way that they can become chairs. Apart from that, there are also many other pieces of furniture that are made from used goods.

5. Saung Kiray

Saung Kiray carries an environmentally friendly concept which uses bamboo trees as a symbol of their eco-policy. In fact the place is integrated with nature, with lots of beautiful green trees around it. The waste utilization system is said to be very good, and their food uses organic ingredients that are free from pesticides and are certainly healthy for the body.

6. Stuja Coffee

Stuja Coffee is a cafe owned by celebrity couple Ayudia Bing Slamet and Dito Percussion. This cafe is here and designed to give you the pleasure of drinking coffee without producing plastic waste. To support its environmentally friendly program, Stuja Coffee uses bottles and organic plastic made from corn and cassava as its coffee packaging. Also their plastic bags for carrying take away are also made from organic materials made from compost. To make it easier for customers to sort their waste, Stuja Coffee also provides segregated waste bins.

7. Retrorika Coffee & Bar

The Retrorika of Coffee & Bar is a restaurant dedicated to going green because the owner happens to work in the realm of environmental conservation. This cafe is very popular among young people who spend time hanging out with their friends. This cafe has a vintage concept that can be seen from various corners of the cafe which are decorated with recycled used goods as decoration.

In terms of supporting an environmentally friendly concept, this cafe also prohibits  single-use plastic packaging, uses stainless steel straws, replaces tissues with cloths, and they also provides baskets for take away orders.

In the waste processing process they apply a blade system and waste recycling. And they make organic waste from food scraps into compost. Meanwhile, for inorganic waste, they make furniture that will later be used in this cafe, starting from making chairs, tables and various wall decorations, all from recycling.
